Do u remember late last year i reported on vandalizime just right outside our caqmpus ...

I was shocked and amazed at the sight of this racial slur written on a bridge just a few feet away from our beloved campus. The bridge on Dilworthtown road had several racial slurs that litter the walls just outside our school .My question is ,who is responsible for cleaning this , who is at fault ,will there be a criminal investigation regarding this matter? CU what do you think?

I am proud to say that the bridge has been painted over....I don’t know if this paint on the bridge had anything to do with last week’s open house and community day but, I’m so happy and equally thankful that the words are gone...often times we say "sticks and stones may break my bones but words may never hurt me", that saying is just a defense mechanism....words do hurt and in the words of Obama "words matter"....I’m not saying words define whom u are but I am saying they matter....cu what do u think.....?

Today is the first day of black history month, according to wikipedia.com Black History Month is a national annual observance for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the decedents of Africans. It is celebrated annually in the United States and Canada in February and the United Kingdom in the month of October.
The remembrance originated in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson as "Negro History Week". Woodson chose the second week of February because it marked the birthdays of two Americans who greatly influenced the lives and social condition of African Americans: former President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass.
Black America especially is given close consideration during this month (Black History Month). National, social, scientific and political contributions by black Americans are both celebrated and recognized. Historic accounts related to the civil war era, the civil rights movement of 1955-1968, mainstream technological advances and inventions that have had a positive impact on the economy of all great nations.
With that being said more than ever in 2010 BLACK IS DEFFINETLY IN...miss America 2010(Miss Virginia Caressa Cameron)one of Americas highest paid female models(Chanel Iman ) the most awards won at the Grammys by a female artist in one night in the whole 52 years of Grammy history(beyonce) and of course the man who holds the highest office in the land (OBAMA)....! Parking Wars...is there a parking war between the university and the students? Seems to me that there is a double standard between the university staff and the students .It is okay for the universities staff members to park in fire lanes, or handicapped parking but when we the students act in the same manner we are punished ....this really hits home for us when we are placed on stop list for parking tickets and from what I have heard from a secret source ,they plan on booting and heavily towing student violators..."CU" what do u think..?

Eta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho is facing criminal charges after injuring several pledges who were on-line for the sorority
Six members of the Sigma Gamma Rho sorority at Rutgers University
in New Brunswick have been arrested and charged with hazing pledges by paddling them and restricting how much they could eat over an eight day period, authorities said today. “At least one victim went to a hospital for non life-threatening injuries,” Rutgers police Lt. Richard Dinan said.

There were at least three victims, but police are still investigating and may identify more victims and more suspects. One victim reported the hazing to police Tuesday, and four sorority members were arrested later that day. Police on Tuesday arrested Vanessa Adegbite, 21, of Jersey City, Kesha Cheron, 20, of Newark, Llana Warner, 20 of Bronx, N.Y. and Joana Bernard, 21, of West Orange. They were charged with aggravated hazing and bail was set at $1,500.

Sigma Gamma Rho is a recognized sorority but the victims were “unofficial pledges” because the hazing did not occur during the university’s recognized pledge period. CU ...I ASK WHEN IS ENOUGH, ENOUGH.I certainly understand that nothing worth having should be just given ,and that hard work and detication are essintial to anything great ,but where and when did we as a people resolt to pure violent acts. The mission Statement of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority's aims to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and education of youth are the hallmark of the organization's programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically, and economically.I wonder if these acts of violence fit into the sororities vision.I am not blaming the intire organization as a whole and wouldn’t wish to sentence anyone whom is undeserving but, wrongs most be made right.IDK ....CU what do you think...?

Cheyney first party this year was a big success. Over 500 students were in attendence and there were no altercations what so ever. This proves that we know how to act and if we keep it up for the next two SGCA events, we may get our parties back.

Whats the deal with the new cameras around campus?If you haven't noticed the university is moving public safety from were the people are, to where the people aren't.In an effort to make the campus community more secure with this move ,they have implemented these cameras.Now personally ,i think this action is well over do (putting up cameras),however i think this action can only be successful if these cameras are partnered with a watchful eye from public safety officers....."CU" what do you think?

Today started like any other day, i went to class then went to launch. However, seeing as though its world AIDS day we (the 1837yall staff) set up a table in Marcus foster to inform "us" about AIDS as well as permote the blog.Everything was swell until....I was stopped by a hater... that's right ...you know somebody always gotta rain on your parade ,but what shocked me the most was that this hater was a staff member.Thats right Ms. Rita Burke ,it all went down like this, as i was passing out the now infamous blog stickers she read the blog tittle "1837yall" and said ,"Yall! this is so ignorant, yall is so country" then proceeded to throw the sticker on the ground...Even though i was surprised ,caught off guard and completely disgusted, i will not alow this act of ignorance to deter me from continuing to do what i feel is necessary for me to achieve happiness or for the blog to act out its mission .Furthermore "YALL" according to wikipedia.org ,"Y'all, formerly spelled "You-all'", is a contraction of the phrase "you all." It is used as a plural second-person pronoun. Today is world Aids day ...didnt ya know....There are a few facts that everyone in our community should be aware of…

1.Today, women account for one out of every four new HIV cases in the U.S. Of these newly infected women, about two out of three are African-American. Most of these women got HIV from having sex with a man. AIDS is now the leading cause of death for African-American women ages 25-34. African-American women are over 21 times as likely to die from HIV/AIDS as non-Hispanic white women.

2. There are a myriad of social and economic factors that result in higher levels of sexual HIV transmission among black Americans. However, higher levels of STDs among African-Americans, also shaped by social and economic factors, in turn facilitate sexual transmission of HIV. Black Americans have 8 times the level of Chlamydia, and 18 times the level of gonorrhea compared to white Americans.

3. A significant proportion of African-Americans do not blame the spread of HIV on risky sexual behavior, but instead hold the government responsible. 48% of African-Americans surveyed by Oregon State University researchers between 2002 and 2003 believed that HIV was a man-made virus. Over half (53%) believed that there was a cure for AIDS that was being withheld from the poor, and 27% thought AIDS was produced in a government laboratory. 12% thought that HIV was created and spread by the CIA and 15% thought it was a form of genocide against blacks

4. A 2009 survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation discovered over a fifth of African-Americans cite HIV/AIDS as the most urgent health problem facing the US, significantly higher than the 6% average. (It should be noted that both figures have declined dramatically since as recently as 2004.) In another survey, four-fifths of African-Americans believed that government spending on the disease domestically was insufficient. They also reported experiencing the highest levels of HIV-related stigma, were the most aware about transmission routes, were the most likely to have been tested, and were the ethnic group that was the most likely to say that they knew someone who was living with HIV or had died of AIDS

5.It is so important to get tested because what you dont know could kill you ...please CU get tested now...

Marian Anderson Music Center Renovation

I know that we have all seen that building across from Truth Hall that is being renovated. That is Marian Anderson Music Center. It is the place where the Cheyney University Soulful Sound Marching Band practiced before they were moved to DSS and then Ada Georges Ballroom.

This building was torn half-way down in October and is said to be completed in 275 days. The construction consists of a water main repair and waterproofing of the electrical vault due to water infiltration on the Cope Hall side of the Building. This renovation will cost 3.2 million dollars.

Now according to the Cheyney website, this renovation should be completed in March of 2010.Some would say, " the University is know for making empty promises and being very unorganized", case in point the atm situation.The ATM was moved in October and has just been set up and running toward the end of november. And many students still have yet to recieve refund checks. Lets us not even begin to talk about registration at he begining of school. So what makes it possible for this project to be completed in March when construction has just begun?IDK ... maybe they'll surpise us this time but what do you think?

New Financial Aid Director Christopher K. Hanlon

Cheyney announces the new appointment of Mr. Christopher K. Hanlon as Financial Aid Director.He said, “My goal is to have Cheyney University become the model financial aid operation in the HBCU community.”Hanlon was previously employed by the Stevenson University , as Director of Financial Aid(a historical white college). His role included implementing a live chat support service during the admissions process.Prior to his employment in Maryland, Mr. Hanlon worked as the Director of Financial Aid for Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, at Immaculata College in West Chester, PA, Ferrum College in Ferrum Virginia, and The College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, VA(other historical white colleges).Among Mr. Hanlon’s many honors and awards, he was named Top 100 National Yearly Management Award by Sears, Roebuck and Company and the Outstanding Advisor Awards at Franklin and Marshall College(more historical white college).

All things considered, I personally find it hard to receive that Mr. Hanlon's primary goal is to " have Cheyney University become the model financial aid operation in the HBCU community" if he was never employed by one.All of Mr.Hanlon's past experiences,awards and accomplishments are commendable but ,the cultural understanding of an HBCU is not anything that can be awarded or studied .It is imperative that Mr.Hanlon be both humble and culturally sensitive for this goal to be accomplished.

The marching band is one of the key elements in the broth of a HBCU ,so it is only right that the first HBCU have one the newly restored marching band in the nation.The program was re-established in 2005 with the assistance of a determined group of students. In the past three years we have been involved in a wonderful journey. The Director of Bands at Cheyney University, Professor Allen Gardner, developed a rich and rigorous environment for music majors and non-music majors to grow aesthetically through preparation, musical instruction, and performance. In addition to being a new member of the “Honda Battle of The Bands Tour this year has been an exciting season full of performances.
